What Apple Dictation already does

From Apple's Apple Dictation guide, checked October 21, 2026:

  • It is free and built into macOS. Turn it on in System Settings, Keyboard, Dictation.
  • You can dictate text of any length. It stops on its own after 30 seconds without speech.
  • In supported languages it adds commas, periods and question marks for you.
  • On a Mac with Apple silicon you can keep typing while you dictate.
  • Depending on your language and settings, your speech is processed on your Mac or sent to Apple.

Who should keep Apple Dictation

  • You dictate a few sentences now and then, and free matters more than anything else.
  • You want speech handled on your Mac where Apple supports it for your language. Check Keyboard settings to see.
  • You also want to control your Mac by voice. Apple's Voice Control does that; VocType does not.

When an alternative helps

People look for another app when they dictate for much of the day: long messages, docs, tickets and AI prompts. They want one hotkey that works the same in every app, and a way to get back what they said earlier.

1. VocType

Press Option + Space to start recording and press it again to stop. VocType pastes the text at your cursor in the app you are using, and keeps your past dictations in History so you can copy them again. Speech is turned into text in the cloud. It costs $9 a month or $70 a year, runs on Mac and Windows and starts with a 30-day free trial on both plans.
