VocType

Dictate into any app

VocType is not tied to one app. Press Option + Space, speak, press it again, and the text is pasted wherever your cursor is on your Mac. These guides cover the apps where the details matter.

How system-wide dictation works

VocType lives in the menu bar. When you stop recording, it turns your speech into text in the cloud, puts the text on the clipboard, presses Command-V in the app in front, then puts back the plain text you had on the clipboard before. Nothing in the other app has to support VocType. If Command-V pastes there, VocType can type there.

That one design choice explains most of what you will see from app to app:

  • It pastes where the cursor is when the text is ready. Click into the field before you press the hotkey, and stay in that window until the text appears.
  • It never presses Return. In chat apps and AI tools, where Return sends, you always get to read the text first.
  • Each app treats pasted text its own way. A terminal may fold a long paste into one line, a notes app may turn each new line into a block, and a chat box may strip formatting. The app guides above cover those details.
  • Some fields refuse a paste. Password and other secure fields often do. Every transcript is saved to History, so you can copy it from there. See when pasting does not work.

Kinds of apps people dictate into

AI coding tools

Prompts to coding agents are long, and they go better with context. Saying it is faster than typing it. Start with voice typing in Cursor and dictating prompts in Claude Code, and see dictation for developers for commit messages and reviews.

Chat and email

Slack, Teams, Messages and your mail app. Dictate the reply, read it, then send it yourself. Names come out right more often once they are in the Personal Dictionary.

Docs and notes

Google Docs, Word, Pages, Notion and Obsidian. Talk through a section in full sentences, then edit on the keyboard. Long recordings are fine: one can run up to 30 minutes.

The terminal

Terminal, iTerm2, Warp and Ghostty all accept a paste, so you can dictate a commit message, a note or a prompt to an agent CLI. Read it before you press Return, because Return runs it.

Before you start

  • VocType runs on Mac and Windows and needs an internet connection.
  • It needs Microphone access to record and Accessibility access to paste. See getting started.
  • If Option + Space is taken in an app you use, pick another Record hotkey. See hotkeys.
