What you need

  • A Mac with macOS 13.0 or later on Apple Silicon, or a PC with Windows 10 or later (64-bit).
  • An internet connection. VocType sends your recording to a cloud speech-to-text service and pastes the text it gets back.
  • A Google account or an email address to sign in.

Install

  1. Download VocType for Mac.
  2. Open the downloaded file and drag VocType into your Applications folder.
  3. Open VocType from Applications. It lives in the menu bar, not the Dock.

Keep VocType in Applications. If you move or rename the app after setup, macOS can forget its permissions and you will need to turn them on again.

Install on Windows (preview)

  1. Download VocType for Windows.
  2. Open the installer you downloaded.

The Windows preview is not signed yet, so Windows SmartScreen shows a warning the first time you open it. Click More info, then Run anyway.

The rest of this guide describes the Mac app. On Windows, the default Record hotkey is Alt + Space.

The setup steps

The first time you open VocType, it walks you through seven short steps:

  1. Welcome.
  2. Microphone. Click Allow so VocType can hear you. See Microphone and Accessibility permissions.
  3. Accessibility. Click Open Settings and turn on VocType. This is what lets it paste into other apps. You can skip it for now, but nothing will paste until you turn it on.
  4. Notifications. Optional. Used for account notices and updates.
  5. Hotkey. Pick your Record hotkey: Option + Space, F5 or F6. See Record hotkey and shortcuts.
  6. Test. Try a short recording.
  7. Sign in. Click Continue with Google. Sign-in finishes in your browser.

After you sign in, start the free trial or subscribe. Plans come with a 30-day free trial on both plans, and a card is needed up front. See Free trial, billing and refunds.

Your first dictation

  1. Click where you want the text to go, in any app.
  2. Press Option + Space and speak.
  3. Press Option + Space again to stop. Your words appear at the cursor.

VocType transcribes English by default. If you speak Urdu or Hindi, open Settings and pick Urdu → English or Hindi → English under Transcription, Speaking language. VocType then pastes the English translation.
