Connection and transcription errors
What the offline, timeout and transcription failed messages mean, and what to do about each one.
Last updated · October 21, 2026
VocType transcribes in the cloud, so it needs an internet connection to turn speech into text.
"Offline" when you press the hotkey
Your Mac reported no connection, so VocType did not start recording. Check your Wi-Fi or network, then press the hotkey again.
"Saved to History" after recording
The recording finished, but the transcript did not come back. The pill tells you why:
- Can't reach VocType: the connection dropped while uploading.
- Transcription timed out: the service took too long to answer.
- Transcription failed: the speech-to-text service returned an error.
- Still transcribing: the same recording is still being processed.
In each case the audio is kept. Click Open History and use Retry once things are back. Failed transcriptions do not count toward your fair-use caps. See History and retrying a failed recording.
Sign-in and plan messages
- Sign in to use VocType or Session expired: click Sign in and continue with Google.
- Choose a plan to dictate: your account has no active plan. Click See plans.
- Activating your subscription: payment went through and your plan is being switched on. This usually takes a moment. If it takes more than two minutes, email support@voctype.com.
- Dictation paused: you reached a fair-use cap. See Recording length and fair-use limits.
- Update required: see Updating VocType.
