Local dictation on your computer

Turn on Local to dictate English on your computer with no cap and no audio sent anywhere. Setup, limits and removal.

Last updated · November 8, 2026

VocType can turn your speech into text in two ways. Cloud sends the recording to our speech-to-text provider. Local does the work on your computer, so your audio never leaves it and English dictation is unlimited.

Turn on Local

Open Settings, General, Speech and pick Local, or choose it during setup. VocType downloads the speech model once: about 730 MB, and it needs 1 GB of free space. You can keep dictating with Cloud while it downloads. When the download finishes, VocType switches to Local on its own.

Local is available on Mac and Windows and needs an active trial or plan, like Cloud.

What Local does and doesn't do

  • Local is English only. If your speaking language is Urdu or Hindi, VocType uses Cloud, which types it in English.
  • Local dictation is unlimited. It doesn't count toward the fair-use caps in the Terms.
  • Local doesn't use your Dictionary words. Replacements still work, so a word Local gets wrong can be fixed with a replacement. See Personal Dictionary.

If Local can't start

Your dictation still goes through. VocType uses Cloud for that recording and the pill says "Used Cloud this time". That dictation counts toward the caps. Settings shows Try again so Local can reload.

History and privacy

Local dictations are saved, encrypted, in History on this computer only. Their audio and text are never sent to our servers. Signing out deletes them from this computer, and so does clearing History or deleting your account.

For your stats, VocType keeps a record in your account of how long each Local dictation was and how many words it had. It never records the audio or the text. The privacy policy has the details.

Remove the speech model

In Settings, General, Speech, click Delete speech model under Local. This frees the space, and VocType goes back to Cloud until you download it again. Your History stays.
